Road Safety Audit M-5 (Grand River Avenue) from Berg to M-39

Cincar Consulting Group, LLC (C2G) served as the Lead Facilitator for the Road Safety Audit (RSA) of 2.8 miles of M-5 Grand River Avenue in Detroit, MI. The objective of the study was to review a recent streetscape project including installation of mid-block crossings and a cycle track. Since project completion the community has voiced safety concerns in the area including speeding, driveway access issues, lighting, and pedestrian crossings.

The RSA included data gathering, analysis of crash reports and existing traffic conditions. A kick-off meeting was held including MDOT staff, City of Detroit, and DDOT. A field review took place during the peak hours which involved driving and walking the facility. A preliminary findings presentation was presented identifying safety concerns, the potential severity and frequency of the crashes, and potential countermeasures for mitigation. A draft and final report were prepared and sent to the owner for final implementation. C2G provided support to the following:

  • Existing conditions safety analysis
  • RSA facilitation
  • Crash mitigation
  • Highway Safety Manual analysis
